e-Aadhaar PDF password format — and how to unlock it instantly

Every e-Aadhaar downloaded from the UIDAI website or DigiLocker is password-protected. UIDAI sets the password using a fixed formula: first 4 letters of your name in UPPERCASE + your 4-digit year of birth. Example — name Ravi Kumar, born 1985 → password RAVI1985. This tool builds that password from your inputs and unlocks the PDF entirely in your browser.

Where you receive your e-Aadhaar PDF

  • UIDAI website (uidai.gov.in) — downloaded after OTP verification
  • DigiLocker — the Aadhaar PDF stored in your DigiLocker is also password-protected
  • mAadhaar app — PDF export from the app follows the same password format
  • Email delivery — UIDAI occasionally sends Aadhaar via registered email, also protected

Name shorter than 4 characters?

If your first name has fewer than 4 letters (e.g. Ali), UIDAI uses as many letters as are available. Try ALI1990 first. If that fails, try using the first 4 letters of your full name including surname — some cards use ALIK if the surname is Khan. Use the Aadhaar Password Format page for a full reference on all edge cases.

How to use this tool

  1. Upload your e-Aadhaar PDF.
  2. Enter the first 4 letters of your name (UPPERCASE) and your 4-digit year of birth.
  3. Click Unlock & Download — the unlocked PDF saves to your device.

Frequently asked questions

Wrong password error — what should I try?

Use the name exactly as printed on your Aadhaar card. Try all-uppercase. If your name is hyphenated or has a space, try just the first word. Check whether your card uses initials before the given name.

Does it matter if I use lowercase?

UIDAI specifies UPPERCASE. Most PDF readers treat passwords as case-sensitive — always use capital letters for the name portion.

My name on Aadhaar has only 3 letters — what's the password?

Use those 3 letters + the birth year. E.g. name 'ALI' born 1992 → try ALI1992. If incorrect, try the first letter of your surname added to make 4 characters.

Is unlocking an Aadhaar PDF legal?

Yes. You are unlocking your own document using the password UIDAI issued to you. This is no different from typing the password in a PDF reader.

Is my Aadhaar document safe?

100% safe. Everything happens inside your browser — your PDF and the personal details you enter are never sent to any server.
