What Is the ITR PDF Password Format?

The Income Tax Department (CPC Bangalore) applies a standard password to all ITR-V acknowledgement PDFs it sends by email: PAN number in lowercase + date of birth in DDMMYYYY format, with no separators.

ITR Password — Worked Example Step by Step

Let’s build the password for Priya Verma, PAN ABCPV5678G, born 5 January 1992:

1. PAN in lowercase: ABCPV5678G → abcpv5678g
2. Date of birth in DDMMYYYY: 5 January 1992 → 05011992 (leading zero is required)
3. Join them without any separator: abcpv5678g05011992

Why Is the ITR-V PDF Password Protected?

The CPC (Centralized Processing Centre) encrypts ITR-V PDFs so that if the acknowledgement email is intercepted or accessed by an unauthorised party, the financial details inside cannot be read without knowing the taxpayer’s PAN and date of birth — two pieces of information only the taxpayer should have.

This is a mandatory security control specified in the Income Tax e-filing system design, not something you can disable from the portal.

CPC-Generated ITR-V vs Self-Downloaded ITR — Password Differences

CPC-generated ITR-V: This is the acknowledgement PDF emailed to you after successful e-filing. Password = PAN lowercase + DDMMYYYY. This is the most common case.

ITR XML downloaded from portal: The XML file itself is not a PDF and has no password. If you convert it to PDF using third-party software, it may or may not be password-protected depending on the software used.

Pre-filled ITR form PDF: The pre-filled ITR form you can download from the e-filing portal (in PDF view) also uses the PAN + DOB format.

HUF, Firm and Company ITR Password Format

For non-individual entities, the password follows the same structure but uses the entity’s PAN and date of incorporation or formation instead of a personal date of birth:

• HUF: HUF PAN (lowercase) + DDMMYYYY of date of formation of HUF
• Partnership firm: Firm PAN (lowercase) + DDMMYYYY of firm registration date
• Company: Company PAN (lowercase) + DDMMYYYY of date of incorporation

The formation or incorporation date is the one registered with the Registrar of Companies (ROC) or the HUF deed date, as applicable.

Password Not Working? Troubleshooting Checklist

• Fix 1 — Check case: PAN must be lowercase. ABCDE1234F15081990 always fails; abcde1234f15081990 works. The tool converts automatically.
• Fix 2 — Leading zeros in DOB: 5 January 1990 → 05011990 (not 5011990). Day and month are always 2 digits.
• Fix 3 — DOB mismatch (PAN vs Aadhaar): The ITR password uses the DOB registered in the Income Tax system (linked to your PAN), not necessarily your Aadhaar DOB. If the two differ, try the PAN-database DOB first, then your Aadhaar DOB.
• Fix 4 — Verify your PAN is 10 characters:Format is 5 letters + 4 digits + 1 letter. The 4th character is always a letter — “P” for Individual, “C” for Company, “H” for HUF.
• Fix 5 — Minor or joint filer:Use the primary filer’s PAN and DOB. For ITRs filed on behalf of a minor, use the minor’s PAN and DOB.
• Fix 6 — Older CPC PDFs (before 2016): Some older ITR-V PDFs use the date without leading zeros. If 05011990 fails, try 5011990 (7-digit date).
